"Gehenna" part II, Written by Darren "Edge" Shier. 1999, 2000 (c) FantasySquare This document is copyright to us and may not be distributed in any form or manner without permission from the author. ------------------------------------------------------------- It was two hours later. Rinoa sat in the chair, staring across at Gehenna in Selphie's body. "Let Me Go." echoed Gehenna. Rinoa blinked. "No." she responded. "You Are A Young Sorceress." stated Gehenna. "Too Young. You Have No Idea Of The Full Extent Of Your Powers." Rinoa tried not to listen to the evil temptress. "I Can Help You To Realise Your Full Potential." Gehenna continued. "I Can Teach You The Ways Of The Sorceress." "I'm getting enough training from Edea, thanks" "Edea Is A Fool. She Does Not Even Possess Her Powers Any Longer." The wheels in Rinoa's mind began turn. "How do you know?" she said. "What?" boomed Gehenna. "You said you were from the past." explained Rinoa. "So how would you know who Edea is? Or Me, for that matter?" "You Talk In Nonsense, Fool." "Oh i dont think so, bucko. For someone from 1422 years ago, you seem to have a pretty good idea what a SeeD is. Who really are you?" Gehenna slumped her head and fell unconscious. "I guess you're not gonna tell me, huh?" The door to the cell swung open. Rinoa stood up and turned around to see a squad of Estharian soldiers enter, followed by President Laguna Loire himself. Doctor Odine eagerly entered right after him, followed by Squall, Cid, Edea, Zell and Quistis. Rinoa noticed the familiar forlorn look on Squalls face. He seemed to be the least happy with this whole situation. Odine exitedly staggered between the group and half-ran up to Selphie. "Ah, now zis iz vrry intrezting" he exclaimed, beginning to unpack the equipment he had brought. He stopped when he saw Rinoa. "Ah! Sorceress Rinoa! Vat a pleasure it iz to zee yu alive unt vell. Haf yu given any zought to mine offer of allowing yu to join me in mine lab for a few dayz? I haf formulated many frsh zheories i beliefe yu ken help me tu prove." Rinoa felt the anger boil up inside her, and done her best to restrain herself. "Keep him away from me or i wont be responsible" she growled. "Is something wrong, Miss Heartilly?" asked Laguna. "This mans face has been burned into the minds of all Sorceresses across time." she exclaimed. "I cant believe i'm to sit here and let one of my kind be subjected to him again." she said as she stormed out of the room. Squall watched her go, then glared at Laguna. "I notice you decided your being here was damn important to the situation." "I wanted to see you, Squall." "Well read a newspaper. I'm very popular." he said sarcastically as he left. Laguna looked to his feet and sighed. Squall did'nt ever have time for him, he thought. Historical Irony? Or Poetic Justice? Either way, his being here was'ent important. Running Esthar was, on the other hand. He signaled to the closest soldier. He was leaving... * * * * * Rinoa found Irvine in the observation post, overlooking the cell. He did'nt hear her enter. He had removed his hat and was slumped forward over the desk, looking in Selphie's direction. "Irv?" she hazarded. He bolted himself upright and faced her in an instant. "Oh-Rinoa...i..did'nt hear you. I was just...." He seemed to be trying to regain his composure and cool exterior. "I was just wondering what you were doing, thats all." she said. "Oh, i was just `keeping a vigil`" he said, trying to force a grin. Rinoa noticed the flush in his cheeks was dying away, and the whites of his eyes seemed to be ringed with red. She sat down beside him. "Irv." she began "Have you been crying?" He hung his head. "Not a very `guy` thing to do is it?" he admitted. "I know i'm supposed to stay unattached but-" "Whoever said that?" she stated. Irvine seemed to glad for the support. "Sometimes i forget you're non-military. I'm not gonna lie to you, Rin, i've never been this scared. What if they cant get that thing out of her? What if she dies? What if i'm all alone again?" "Hey, hey" she said, putting her arm over his shoulder, trying to comfort him. "You're gonna be fine you two. Squall will find a way to save her. There's nothing you're feeling now that he didnt when i was possessed." Even her smile made him feel better. Irvine was in love with Selphie, but that didnt mean he could'nt ever talk to Rinoa. There was something about her. He didnt see her like he saw Selphie. He had no interest in Rinoa, romantically. Sure he had tried to make a pass at her when they had first met, but it had felt very unusually strange to him, so he'd stopped. They were good friends now, and they had enjoyed plenty of talks together. Irvine could'nt explain what it was, but, well...he was a guy with no family in the world. He had'nt got a single memory of his mother, but Rinoa seemed to fill that gap. She felt more like a cousin than a friend. "You're gonna be fine, Irv." she said. "You and Selphie will be back to normal and annoying the hell out of all of us in no time" she grinned. He was a able to smile for a few seconds, which soon faded as he saw Odine was about to get to work on Selphie/Gehenna... * * * * * * Trate swung the grappling-iron over the balcony and tugged hard to make it tight. So far so good, he thought as he let the boat sink under his feet and began to ascend up the blue and white exterior of the mighty Balamb Garden. Upon reaching the top he swung his legs over the rail and vaulted up and over into the Quad, landing with cat-like presicion. He stood up and looked around. From the little he remembered of the history of Balamb Garden, he was in the Quad. That meant that the SeeD Gehenna was in possession of would be in a holding room. They were to the east of here. No doubt she'd be being guarded. But perhaps there was a way around that... Squall sat on the desk and looked down at Quistis and Rinoa. "What have you got?" he said, looking at the parchments and scrolls in front of him. "I was able to get these off Edea." explained Rinoa. "Its a record of known Sorceresses throughout history. Written in a language only Sorceresses can speak or read." "So?" "So," said Quistis "I've been going through it with Rinoa's help" "And?" "Not finding a lot. We've been able to find 2299, The Year Of Ahmela. But there is no Sorceress Gehenna in this time." "Are you sure?" "Positive. I have Sorceress Ahmela, Averls, Absilhane and Teryl. No Gehenna." "So what does this mean?" Quistis and Rinoa exchanged looks. "It means that someone is telling lies." announced Quistis... Odine readied the ethereal scalpel, sterilising it with Esuna Essence. He looked at the monitors to his left. One showed a 3D projection of Selphie's head and face perpetually rotating. The other was of an unfamiliar blonde woman estimated to be in her late forties. Presumably this was the true face of Sorceress Gehenna. The device blipped green to signal that the ethereal scalpel was ready. He marvelled at it. It was like a cutting shears for the soul, able to drive an astral wedge between two blended spirits. He had invented it to research into out-of-body experiences. It proved successful when several test subjects had been permanently stranded from their bodies, leaving behind patients in a waking coma. His "vegetable garden" as he jokingly called them. It was entirely 50/50 on who would remain in the body of Selphie once she and Sorceress Gehenna were separated. Selphie could return safe and sound, or Gehenna could be permanently in control. He really hoped it would be Gehenna. Then he could take her back to his lab and would have the opporunity to study the impossible; a Sorceress with no power. He prepped the machine and began the process that would drive one spirit out of the body, but was halted by Squall bursting open the door. "Stop what you're doing!" he shouted, practically throwing Odine across the room. "I demant tu no vat iz goink on!!" Odine yelled. "Eat It, Doctor Death!!" threatened Quistis as she walked in, kicking the little Nazi out of her way. "Gehenna!" shouted Squall. "We need to talk." Selphie's head slowly raised...with yellow eyes. "I Will Not Speak With The Vileness That Is SeeD." she boomed. "Get Me Sorceress Rinoa." "She's busy." stated Quistis. "But we want to talk to you." "I Do Not Hear The Words Of Murderers." explained Gehenna. "What are you talking about?" asked Squall. "You Would Understand. You Are To Primitive." "Thats were you're wrong." said Quistis. "We already know some things about you that you think we dont." "Explain." "We done some research into `Tempus Arcadia`." Quistis explained. "....The Record Of Hyne's Descendants..." mused Gehenna. "Yeah." said Squall. "The Who's-Who of Sorceresses. You should complain to your PR exec. You've been left out." "There is no Gehenna in 2299. You're lying to us." "You Are Indeed Smart, For Murderers." "What is all this `murderers` crap?" asked Quistis. "And who really are you?" Gehenna began her story; "I Am A Sorceress. But I Am Not From The Past. I Am From The Future. I Am From The Second Dark Era...The Time Of Ultimecia." "Ultimecia?!" exclaimed Squall and Quistis in sync. "She Was The Sorceress Who Ruled My Time When I Was But A Child. All Who Live In My Time Believed That Her Defeat Would Be The Dawn Of A New World Of Peace. We Had Witnessed 5 SeeDs And A Sorceress Travel From The Past And Defeat Ultimecia. We Believed Her Evil Reign Was Over Forever. But A Few Of The Sorceress Began To Quarrel Over Who Would Be The Prime Sorceress Now. So We Fought Each Other, With Dire Consequences. The People Tired Of Our Conflicts, And They Did Not Want A Sorceress In Power. Knowing That Only The SeeDs From The Past Had Been The Only Ones Capable Of Defeating A Sorceress, They Had Garden Born Again. New SeeDs. SeeDs Of The Future. But Their Agenda Was Different To The SeeD Of This Time. They Do Not Simply Oppose Any Sorceress Who Attempts To Gain Power. Their Agenda Is Simple. `Wipe Them Out...All Of Them` Is Their Credo. They Are Trying To Destroy ALL Sorceresses. Good Or Bad. So We Divided Up Our Power And Went Into Hiding. I Was One Of The Sorceresses Who Became A `Temporal Refugee`, Fleeing Into The Past. But SeeD Learned Of A Way To Get Us Even After We Had Left Our Bodies. They Created The `Tempus Fatali`. SeeDs Who Could Take Permanent Possesion Of ANY Person Of This Time. They Take Control Of A Person And Instantly Know Everything That Person Does. They Actually Become The One The Possess. When That Person Is Killed, The `Tempus Fatali` Take Control Of The Next Person Who Touches The Body Of The Last Host. There is One Out There Now. He Cannot Be Killed And He Is Coming For Me." Squall and Quistis had fallen silent at this bombshell. It was their fault. Their actions had led to the creation of a new Garden in the future, which had begun to massacre Sorceresses by the hundreds. "Thats why you were so afraid of us when we discovered you were a Sorceress" said Squall. "SeeD Are A Band Of Murderers Where I Come From." said Gehenna. "How Else Would You Expect Me To React?" "Gehenna." began Quistis "This `Tempus Fatali`...How do we know who he is?" "You Cant." responded Gehenna grimly. "He Can Hide Himself Perfectly. The `Tempus Fatali` Are Like That. They Are Everyone, And They Are No-one. I Will Only Know Who He Is In The Final Seconds Before He Kills Me And My Vessel, As It Was In Tollane." "Thats when you passed into Selphie." realised Squall. "You were trying to save yourself." "The `Tempus Fatali` Will Come Here. And He Will Kill Me. Your Friend Too." Odine had been listening with grim interest. A SeeD who could travel back in time and become anyone of that era. Think of what an incredible discovery this could be! If he could persuade the SeeD to return with him to Esthar, he would actually have a direct link with the future. But these two SeeDs, they were plotting to stop the Tempus Fatali. He could'nt allow that!! He was prepared to sacrifice Tilmitt and Gehenna for an even greater discovery. The Tempus Fatali. For now, these SeeDs had to be taken care of. Squall and Quistis were taken by surprise, and had no time to react as they were struck unconscious by Odine wielding an oxygen-cylinder. Gehenna watched from her restraints, unable to help. "Odine." "Yu kno whu i em?" "I Am From The Future." she said. "The Events Of This Time Are Legend To My People. I Know Some Things About You." "Yu kno mine future?" "I Do." "Tel me...do i bekome hailed az ze greatest scientist in history." "No." she said, almost grinning. "Legend Records Your Death. They Say That You Died...Talking To A Sorceress From The Future." Odine began to panic, sweat of fear began to roll down his forehead. He had to get out of here. "What's The Matter Doctor?" growled Gehenna. "Dont Believe In Legend?" He scrambled for the door. If he could get out of this room and never talk to Gehenna he could cheat fate. As his hand rested on the doorknob, the door was blown off it's hinges and in walked Trate. "Please!" begged Odine. "Help me! She's going to kill me!!" Trate looked at Odine, then the unconscious figure's of Squall and Quistis, then finally up at Gehenna in Selphie's body. "Wrong." Trate said to Odine. "I am. There must be no witnesses to the execution of a Sorceress." Odine could not react before Trate unloaded his gun into his chest. The last thing he ever saw was the redness that oozed from his stomach as he fell back onto the machinery. "Historical irony, dont you think, Sorceress Gehenna." began Trate "That the chase should end right here, in the Great Balamb Garden itself, which was the creator of our own little war." "Before You Destroy Me, Know Only This. My Death Will Only Serve To Fuel The Fire That Already Burns Strong In The Hearts Of The Sorceress Resistance. We Will Defeat SeeD, And i Will Be Avenged." "Fighting words." said Trate. "But that's all they are. Words." Trate stepped over to Squall and picked up Griever. He began to turn it around in the air, trying to gain a feel for it. "Wow. The legendary gunblade of Squall Leonhart himself. I honestly cant say the amount of times i passed by this thing in the Garden museum. To think, this was the gunblade that struck the deathblow to Sorceress Ultimecia." He steadied the blade in front of Selphie's chest. "How fitting it should serve to defeat yet another Sorceress." Without hestation, Trate forced his weight behind Griever and drove it into Selphie's chest. Gehenna screamed and fell silent. Trate let the gunblade drop with a loud "Clang!" onto the floor. His mission was accomplished. Gehenna was dead. Now he had to get out of Garden. There were always other Sorceresses to be killed. * * * * * * * Rinoa and Irvine walked down the corridor towards the room where Gehenna was being held. Trate almost knocked them over as he left the room. He said nothing and began to walk away down the hall. "Hey!" Rinoa called after him. "Did Squall find out if i was right about Gehenna.?" "Not really." replied Trate. "It's a dead issue, i'm afraid." Just as she was wondering what the heck the stranger meant, Irvine's yells pierced the air. "Rinoa!!" he shouted. "Oh my Gods!!" He bounded into the holding room and ran up to where Selphie was, a fine line of red ran down her chest. He pulled the restraints off her with seemingly super-human strength and lay her on the floor. She had no pulse and no breath. Rinoa slammed her fist down on the button to call for a medical emergency, then tried to help Squall and Quistis up. Squall saw Selphie's body, not moving. "What happened here?" he said. Irvine instantly had a flash of the strangers face. "That guy!" Before anyone could stop him, Irvine had drew his gun and run out the door. "The `Tempus Fatali`?" pondered Squall to Quistis. Rinoa looked up at Quistis and Squall, cradling Selphie in her arms. "Go." she ordered. "I'll wait for Kadowaki here." Quistis drew her whip whilst Squall picked up Griever, stopping only to wipe the blood from it. "Someone else's blood belongs on this." he said, grimly. Rinoa watched them go, praying Kadowaki would get here soon... * * * * * * * Trate made sure the rope was secure before he would begin the climb back down from the Quad to the boat below. He cried out in both agony and surprise as the back of his knee exploded into redness and he fell to the ground, disabled. Sprawled on the ground, he turned and saw Irvine Kinneas satanding there, his gun still smoking. Not saying a thing, he raised the gun and pointed the barrel right at Trate's head. Kadowaki had rushed Selphie to the infirmary. She'd stopped the blood, but the heart needed to be restarted. "Come on, Selphie" Kadowaki grunted as the monitor continued to read a flatline. Rinoa could do nothing but watch and pray for Selphie through her tears... Selphie felt herself leave her body, and stared in awe at the scene below her. Kadowaki was desperately trying to reawaken her dead body. But thats just a vessel, Selphie thought. What is me, what is Selphie Tilmitt, has gone. I'm here. Not there. Much as i want to, i cant come back. I wish i could, but it's beyond my ability. She drifted out through the roof and saw the Garden below her, fading fast, until her entire world became a blue dot in the distance, and it was just her, swimming through a sea of stars. I'm sorry everyone. I'm sorry Irvine. I'm sorry Rinoa. But my journey end's here. I'll miss you all... "Porcelain" by Moby. In my dreams I'm dying all the time As I wake it's kaliedoscopic mind I never meant to hurt you I never meant to lie So this is Goodbye This is Goodbye Tell the truth you never wanted me Tell me In my dreams I'm jealous all the time As i wake I'm going out of my mind Going out of my mind * * * * * * Squall and Quistis raced around the corner to find Irvine pointing the gun right at Trate. "Dont do this, Kinneas" pleaded Trate. "Give me a damn good reason." said the sniper, coldly. Trate looked up at Squall, Quistis and Irvine. "I'm a SeeD, like you." "No." growled Squall. "You're nothing like us." "We're soldiers." said Quistis. "You are murderers. There's a differnce." "I can be a valuable ally to you." begged Trate. "I have knowledge of your future's. I know things you don't." He began to plead to them individually. "Squall Leonhart. I can tell you whether your path lies with Rinoa or with SeeD." Squall stood silent for a moment. "Thats something i'd rather find out for myself." "I can tell you if you and Rinoa will finally be able to lead a normal life together." "Again, i'd rather find that out myself." "I can help you defeat the Cult Of The Sorceress Blood. I know who they are!" "The who?" "Damn. You dont even know who they are in this timeframe. Blast." Trate turned his plea's to Quistis. "Quistis Trepe. I can be of great help to you." "Yeah right." "Your parents are alive. I know who they are and where they are. I can find them for you." Quistis stood silent, in awe of this revelation. "My...parents..?" She realised Squall was looking at her. "You're from years into the future." Quistis said to Trate. "Anything you claim to know of me, you must have read in the history books. That means whatever happens to me happens without your help. No thanks." Trate's gaze fell upon the one with the gun. "Kinneas...." "You killed her." Irvine began. "There's no future for me without her." Trate brought himself into a standing position by clutching the rail behind him. "But, i know things about you. Things you've always wanted to know. I know whether or not you ever are released from Exile. That picture you have, the one of you as a baby." "What about it?" "The baby on the left is you." "I know that, asshole." "The baby on the right is your twin sister." "I know that too." "But i know just who your sister is. I know where she is. I help you find her." Irvine began to play this over in your head. "I also know who your father is. I know why he had you and your sister seperated at birth. I can give you his name." Irvine looked over to Squall and Quistis. He needed their strength, their will to resist Trate's temptations. Trate kept his eye on Kinneas, waiting for the moment when he was distracted. He reached behind him for the gun and pulled it out from his belt. Irvine saw the flash as the sunlight reflected off the gun, and on reflex snapped the trigger as his sniper instincts kicked in, unloading an entire round in Trate's chest. The force of the bullets overbalanced Trate and he fell over the rail towards the sea, far below. They looked down at the white foam of the ocean, as the lifeless Trate succumbed to it's cold grasp. "He's dead." said Irvine. Squall and Quistis looked at each other. "If what we were told is true," said Quistis "Then Trate may be able to come back as whoever touches his body next." "Maybe." said Sqauall... Selphie began to feel herself drift into the light. It felt like she was in an ocean. She was becoming a part of a vast sea, surrendering to it. Then a hand drifted into view, a lady's hand, beckoning her to grab her hand. Selphie reached out towards it, and felt herself being lifted from the "sea of light". She was standing in front of Gehenna, a blazing figure of white. "You're never were an evil Sorceress, were you?" Gehenna shook her head. "You were just afraid of us." Gehenna nodded. "What happens now?" Gehenna became brighter and brighter until she was like a star that filled Selphie's vision, before Selphie was overcome by a powerful feeling of displacement and she felt the world reaching out to grab her.... An immense feeling of sadness enveloped the infirmary. Kadowaki had switched off most of the machines that read permanent flatline. "Record time of death at 16.34." she said sadly, as she removed her blood-stained gloves. Squall and Zell hung their heads in sadness. Quistis and Rinoa tried to fight their tears and Cid placed a hand on Irvine's shoulder. She was the brightest star of them all. She was their ray of light. "What happens now?" asked Zell, to anyone who could answer. Irvine stood bravely. "I'm going to take her back to Trabia." he said. "And have her cremated on a pyre. It's her people's way. It's what she would have wanted. I just hope th-" He was interrupted as Selphie's body glowed and she arched her back screamed as the soul began to re-enter the body and merged with her. She opened her eyes and found herself looking into the eyes of the friends she thought she'd left behind forever. "My gods" said Kadowaki. "It's a miracle!" "...no..." groaned Selphie. "....It was ...Gehenna... She sent..... ... me...back." She fell unconscious again. "Doc?" said Irvine, frantically. "I dont understand it." marvelled Kadowaki. "Life signs show stable. ....She's come back to us." Everybody breathed a sigh of relief, exept for Irvine, who just hugged close the only girl he was ever truely in love with... It was midnight. Squall sat in the desertes cafeteria. He was holding a cup off coffee in one hand whilst staring off into space. "Squall?" said Rinoa, derailing his train of thought. "What are you doing?" "....I'm thinking." "Of?" "I keep thinking of what Gehenna said." he explained. "Of the future. There's a war going on there. That Neo-SeeD are a bunch of genocidal-scumbags trying to wipe out all Sorceresses. And it's my fault." "Dont say that." "But its true. When i killed Ultimecia, i set into motion a chain of events that ended up with the creation of a new Garden full of evil SeeDs. I'm a True SeeD. We're supposed to stop wars. Now i've started one unintentionally. I was doing it for you. I defeated Ultimecia so we could be together." "Do you regret doing it, knowing that it led to a war?" "I dont regret anything that lets us be together." he said, and he stood up and held her close. "War or not, we're together here and now." "I dont want the future." said Rinoa, hugging him. "I just want to be here with you." Squall finished. And they stood there in the moonlight, alone in their own present time... Irvine sat in the chair, looking at Selphie sleep. "The doctors say you're going to be fine, Sefie." He said. "They explained it to me. They said that your brain is like a computer. It was working strangely for a while there, so now it's "rebooting". You'll still be you and have all your memories when you wake up. Its just gonna take some time, okay?" She slept there, motionless. "They say that you're able to hear me. I just need to tell you that i'm sorry i was'ent there for you when you were going through that. I was afraid. Afraid i was going to lose you and i could'nt face my fear. But it will NEVER happen again! I'll never let anyone hurt you, you hear me? I almost lost you....I never want that to happen again." She turned over in her sleep. "I'm not the smartest guy in the world. I joke around too much and i make a lot of people dislike me. But you're different to everyone else. You like the stupid jokes and all the rest. You like who i am underneath this exterior. Nobody's ever wanted me for who i really am. I dont know how serious you think we are. I know we've never used the "L" word yet. But i did'nt realise until you were almost taken from me that... ...I'm in love with you, Selphie Tilmitt. I was in love with you ever since we were children. When we were seperated, i always found myself thinking about you, wondering where you were and what you were doing. Then you returned into my life, and i know now that i love you more than anything else. It seems i've spent too long thinking about myself. Now i want to spend my life caring for somebody else." He picked up the guitar by his side and began to strum a few chords. "On a lighter note, there were songs i wrote about you. I wrote a few of these when we were in the Sorceress War together. This is one i wrote for you soon after we got together. It's about how i'll always be with you, even when i'm gone. And thats what i'm gonna do. I'm going to sit here and be with you until you wake up." He began the chords and started the tune and began to serenade her. On a quiet night like this, it was all you could hear in the Garden... "Find A Way To My Heart Find a way to my heart, and I will always be with you. From wherever you are, I'll be waiting. I'll keep a place in my heart, you will see it shining through. So find a way to my heart, and I will, I will follow you. This journey's not easy for you, I know. If your footsteps get too faint to hear, I'll know. Cos you know, questions are never that easy. And never the same. You have the answer believe me, If you have the faith to Find a way to my heart ... Time may come, and time may go, I know. If you should call out for me, I'll know. But you know, there is a code to be broken, I wrap it around. Without a word being spoken Without a sound. There's a reason I hide my heart. Out of sight out of mind. And when I find out just who you are, The door will be open for you to.. Find a way to my heart..." THE END -------------------------------------------------------- Authors note; The song Irvine sings; "Find A Way To My Heart", was written by Phil Collins and is available on the album "...But Seriously". Also, in order to continue on the Final Fantasy VIII saga, bringing in new plot threads is not only nescessary, its essential and helps the charecters to develop even further. I would like to have feedback on what people think of things like the Seifer/Fujin pairing, the Quistis/Zell pairing, Quistis's parents and Irvine's sister. In the meantime, thank you for reading my Fic.There'll be more to come. "This is only the beginning....."
