                     A New Evil

The day's running up to Rinoa's birthday saw everyone in the garden preparing 
the Quad for the party. Squall had taken Rinoa on a small holiday for her 
birthday.
"Is Selphie always this bossy?" Kerrick asked Zell as he carried yet another box 
of decorations into the Quad.
"Yup, she likes bossing people around." Replied Zell also carrying decorations, 
"She's in her prime when it comes to organising things."
"Ah well, you've got to admire her determination."
"Yeah, I suppose. Hey Seph, where do you want these?"
"Over there please Zell." She said, "Oh and Zell, could you go and hold the 
ladder steady for Quisti while she's putting that banner up?"
"Yeah, sure." He said, "Anything for Quisti." He whispered under his breath. 
If you can remember Zell has a huge crush on Quistis. He made his way over to 
where Quistis was standing, "Hi Zell." She said with a smile.
Zell was going seriously red, "Hi." He said nervously.
"Are you going to hold the ladder for me?"
"Yeah, I'll hold it steady don't you worry."
Quistis began to climb the ladder, "That's one high ladder!" Thought Zell, "I 
hope she isn't scared of heights."
"You up there Quisti?" Came Selphie's voice from behind him, "You got the other 
end of the banner? Good. Right bring it up to the right a bit, a bit more, just 
a tad more, perfect!" 
Just as Selphie finished speaking, Quistis fell off the ladder, "Shit!" Shouted 
Zell as she came falling towards him screaming, "This'll take al my skill." He 
positioned himself directly beneath Quistis and stuck out his arms, she fell 
safely into them.
"Zell, you saved me!" She said and flung her arms round him.
Zell felt a wave of happiness flood through him. He realised something else 
then, he didn't have a crush on Quistis, he loved her. "Don't mention it." He 
sighed.
He lowered her to her feet and they gazed into each other's eyes for a while 
then Quistis said, "Thank you." And kissed him lightly on the lips.
As she walked towards Selphie Zell stood and watched still in the same position 
as he had been in when Quistis had kissed him, "Zell man, what happened?" 
Kerrick and Irvine came running up to him, "Zell? Are you in there?" Kerrick 
continued this time waving his hand in front of Zell's face.
"Oh, what?" Said Zell suddenly realising what was going on.
"What happened?"
"Oh, Quistis fell off the ladder and I caught her."
"And she kissed you." Said Irvine 
"Yeah she did, so what?"
"Zell, are you going red?" Said Irvine smiling slightly.
"Huh? N-No."
"You like Quistis don't you?"
Zell said nothing, "Why didn't you tell us? Kerrick, did you know about this?"
"Uhhh..." Said Kerrick looking at the ceiling.
"You told him before us?" Why?"
"I thought you might tell her." Said Zell
"Zell, we wouldn't have told her if you didn't want us to."
"I guess you're right, I was being silly."
"So are you going to ask her out?"
"In the party."
"Well you better get you're chat-up lines ready, the party's tomorrow!"
"Shit I forgot! I've still got tonight and tomorrow morning though."
"True, look out here comes Selphie. Quick, look busy!"
"What'cha up to boys?" She said sweetly.
"Nothing darling." Said Irvine knowing what was coming next.
"EXACTLY!!!!! NOW GET BACK TO WORK!!!!"
"Sorry Sephie." Said Kerrick trying not to laugh.
"I'll give you sorry." She replied in a playful tone, this shocked Kerrick and 
Irvine, "Well I'll see you boys later." She winked at them and walked away.
"Did she just do what I thought she did?" Said Kerrick still shocked.
"I bloody well hope not!" Said Irvine slightly annoyed.
"Huh? Did I miss something?" Said Zell confused.
"We think Selphie was just flirting with Kerrick here!" Said Irvine glaring at 
Kerrick.
"What the hell have I done?!?!" 
"Nothing, sorry. I'm gonna got talk to Selphie."
"What's with him?" Zell asked Kerrick.
"Dunno man. Woah! We better get back to work."

Elsewhere, Squall and Rinoa lay on a beach outside the orphanage, "Thank you for 
bringing me here Squall, it's so peaceful." Rinoa said cuddling close to her 
boyfriend.
"I love it here." He said gazing into her big hazel eyes, "I used to come down 
here as a child when I wanted to be alone."
"Squall, something's been bothering me since Kerrick joined us."
"Oh? What's that?"
"I can sense something inside him. A dormant power, a power similar to Edea's."
"Really? Why don't we go ask her about it?"
"Yes, lets.
They left the beach and walked up towards the orphanage with Rinoa wondering 
what could be hiding within Kerrick.
