Final Fantasy VIII is no exception. All enemies leave behind useful items which can become quite useful (and rare) as the game progresses. The items gained depend on the level of the monster and the how far the characters have advanced in the game. The difference between Final Fantasy VIII and its predecessors is in its ability (or rather the ability of the player) to increase the chances of rare items appearing after a battle. There are two GF's who possess the "Rare Item" abiltiy: Bahamut and Eden. This ability GREATLY increases a players chances of acquiring rare (and VALUABLE) items after battles. In some cases this may be the only way of obtaining the necessary items for a particular weapon or ability, for example. This is by no means the ONLY way of obtaining rare items. The "Card Mod" ability (learned by GF Quetzacotl) allows players to modify Triple Triad Cards in a given ratio to obtain items. Mugging enemies is also another means of gaining items (see my Mugging Guide for more information on the subject). However, this is where the game gets tricky. During certain battles, a player is unknowingly given a choice: either mug the enemy or wait for the end of the battle to get items. This explains why at times when a player mugs an enemy there are NO items to be collected after the battle ends and he emerges victorious. All I am saying is to be careful when you mug enemies; but DON'T worry: I am such a nice guy that I will warn you when you MAY encounter such a choice (at times "Lady Luck"'s at your side and you can kill two birds with one stone). HOWEVER, if you fight a monster who was ONCE a boss (but now is an average enemy), you will be able to acquire different items after the battle. If this is the case the enemy will be repeated and AFTER the "(!)" sign the DISC where he appears will be in parenthesis. -- In the case of bosses, the parenthesis before the item denotes the amount of items that can be gained, since it is predetermined. -- If there is a chance that by mugging you are unable to acquire any spoils, a "(x)" sign will be shown after the enemy's name -- Occasionally, enemies leave behind cards after a battle (their cards) If this ocurrs, there will be a "(C)" after the name.
