This is my very first FAQ however so please be ever so lenient on me ;P. Final Fantasy 9 if you didnt know (but you should know) is developed by a company known as Squaresoft. As you can tell this is the 9th instalment of the series and as always it has no connections, story or character wise, to previous Final Fantasy's. Be warned there may be mistakes lurking around here and if you spot any please mail me and tell me about them at sakura@fantasysquare.com. This FAQ is designed to help people with the game and most of the basic stuff (like saving, controls etc.) can be found in the game's manual so I will not cover those here. Well on with the show! This FAQ is largely incomplete as I've yet to add in everything I want to put in but it's good for now. WARNING!!! There can be some SPOILERS in this FAQ. As the writer I will try my best to prevent any type of spoilers in my FAQ but you never know. ************* Revision History ************* Version 0.1 -FIRST VERSION! Yay! Currently what you see is what you get so far. ******************************** Battle System and the Mechanics of FF9 ******************************** Contrary to Final Fantasy 8's Junction system, FF9 goes back to the "roots" of previous FF's and adopts a system combining elements from the FF's of yesteryear. FF9's battle are random and you may get into a battle whenever you're in a dungeon. ------------------ Ready for Battle ------------------ Final Fantasy 9 uses the ever famous ATB (Active Time Battle) bars we've seen in all FF's from 5 and onwards. When your in Battle the four characters in your party are on one side while the enemy is on the other. Each of the characters in your party has an ATB bar and when that bar is filled the character can execute a command. After you have selected and executed the command you must wait until that characters ATB is full before executing another command. If more that one character's ATB is filled during battle you can switch between characters by pressing the triangle button. When all characters have lost all their HP or are given the status of petrify, venom or stop it is GAME OVER. Also If you end a character with dead KO'd characters. Those KO'd characters will not earn any AP or EXP after battle until they are revived. Also take note of your HP when in Battle. When your HP is yellow it means your in Critical status and near death When your HP is Red it means your character has been KO'd and cannot Fight until revived. ------------------- Character Classes ------------------- For the first time since FF5 or 6 each of the eight playable characters has a predetermined class that you cannot change. What this means is that in battle each character has his/her own set of commands for example: Vivi is a black mage therefore he uses the Black Magic command. Unlike FF7 or 8, characters cannot interchange abilities or commands. For example: Zidane is a thief therefore he cannot use black or white magic, he can only steal and use the command abilities of "Skill." Make sense? Also each character can only use certain types of armour and weapons. For example: Steiner can equip the "Chain Mail" because he is a knight. Zidane cannot equip the Chain mail because he's a thief. Sometimes there are exceptions to this rule. --------------------- The Abilities System --------------------- This is the system utilised in FF9. Basically you can learn two types of abilities, support and command abilities. Support Abilities are shown with blue diamond like shape next to it. These abilities are used by "equipping" them with the appropiate amount of blue crystals. The number of blue crystals a character has is shown next to it's portrait in the menu and the number of crystals a character has increases at level up. These abilities aid your characters much the way support abilities aided your character in FF8. They include things like increasing HP or MP, guarding against status abnormalities or automatically having Regen on your character in battle. These abilities help maximise your characters potential in battle. However you cannot equip all support abilities on your character at once. You have to decide which ones are appropiate for the situation. For example Auto-Regen is a great ability to have equiped on a character but it costs a lot of blue crystals to equip. But you are going up against a boss that casts a lot of status change magic. Is it wiser to equip Auto-regen or equip the abilities that guard against status abnormalities? Also most characters use similar Support abilities but there are Character specific support abilities such as the "Boost" ability which only Dagger or Eiko can use and no one else can. Command abilities are shown with a red diamond like shape next to it. These abilities are commands a character can use in battle. For example Vivi can learn the command ability "Fire." When Vivi has this ability you can go into the black magic menu in battle and use this ability. These types of abilities tend to be more character specific. For example only Zidane can learn the command ability "Flee" and no one else can. Eiko and Garnet however can share certain white magic command abilities. Learning abilities however is not too hard and doesnt require too much thinking. When a character puts on a piece of equipment , that piece of equipement has abilities that the character can learn. These abilities are shown to you as you select the piece of equipment you want to put on. The abilities that are in grey are abilities your character cannot use. Abilities in white however are ones your character can use. When you put on that piece of equipment your character can use those abilities straight away but when you take off that piece of equipment the abilities can not be used anymore unless you re equip it. However there is a way for the character to "learn" that ability by gaining AP after battle while having that piece of equipment on. When the AP requirement for that ability is reached the equipment needed for the ability can be removed and the ability can be used without the need for that piece of equipment. For example: Vivi equips the "Silk Shirt" armour and that piece of armour allow him to learn the "thunder" command ability. The AP requirement for thunder is 30 AP. So Vivi gains AP at the end of each battle until he gains the AP requirement to learn Thunder. After he has learned Thunder he can dis-equip the silk shirt and still be able to use the Thunder ability without the need to equip the silk shirt. The abilities system isn't too hard to get the hang of. You can experiment with the most economical way of allocating support abilities to your characters maximising their strength in battle. So relax and have a play around with the system. In my opinion it is more forgiving than FF8s Junction system. ---------------- Trance ---------------- This is a special status your character can enter under certain circumstances. Trance can be achieved by filling the Trance bar (it's the orange bar behind the ATB bar). When this bar is filled the character enters trance status and gets a boost in his/her stats as well as use commands not usually available to them outside of Trance status. For example when Vivi enters trance, instead of the Blk Magic command, he has Dbl Blk instead. This allows him to cast a two spells in one turn. Trance only lasts for a few turns however and if you end a battle while in trance, your trance meter will be emptied. ----------------- Status Changes ----------------- These are the harmful status changes. The manual has more info about them but for the sake of completeness I will list the harmful status changes here and how to get rid of it. I will also list the "good" statuses and how to gain them. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------- Bad Status Effect of status (cure for status) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------- Doom When timer expires, the character dies (end battle before timer runs out) Zombie Character is uncontrollable and curative magic hurts instead of heals (Use "Magic Tag" item to cure) Silence Character cannot use magic (use Echo screen item or cast Esuna on affected character) Heat Character dies instantly if he/she initiates an action (cast ice or water magic on the affected character) Freeze Character cannot move and will die if physically attacked (cast Fire magic on the affected character) Darkness Character has very little chance of hitting the enemy physically (use the "Eye drops" item or cast Esuna) Venom Character gradually loses HP and cannot move. If all party members are in this status it's GAME OVER. (cast Panacea or use the "antidote" item) Poison Character gradually loses HP (cast Panacea or use the "antidote item) Petrify Character turns to stone and is classified as dead. (cast Stona or use the "Soft" item) Mini Character shrinks and physical attacks are reduced to 1 (cast Mini or use the "remedy" item) Sleep Character goes to sleep and cannot be used. (cast Esuna or physically attack the affected character) Slow Slows the ATB bar down (use the "Remedy" item) Stop Character stops completely. When all party members are like this It's GAME OVER. (use the "remedy" item) Trouble When affected character get hits with an attack all other party members receive half the damage. (use the "Annoyntment" item) Virus Character doesn't recieve AP or EXP after battle (use the "Vaccine" item) Confuse Character randomly attacks enemy and ally (cure with physical attack or cast "esuna") Beserk Character's strength is increased but attacks enemy non stop (cure with Gysahl Greens) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------- Good Status Effect of status (How to get in this status) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------- Float All earth based magic attacks will not hurt the character (use "Float" magic or have support ability "auto-float") Regen HP is gradually restored throughout the battle (use "Regen" magic or have support ability "auto regen") Auto Life Character is automatically revived when KO'd (use "Auto life" blue magic or have support ability "auto life") Haste Character's ATB bar will fill up faster (use "Haste" magic or have support ability "auto haste" Protect Character has all physical damage halved (use "protect" magic) Shell Character has all magical damage halved (use "shell" magic) Vanish Character cannot be hit by physical attacks but can be hit by magical attacks. (use "vanish" blue magic) Reflect Kind of a double edged sword. It reflects offensive magic back at the enemy but also curative magic as well. Note that not all magic can be reflected. (use "reflect" magic, Carbunkle summon or support ability "auto reflect"). ---------------------------- ATE (Active Time Events) ---------------------------- This is a new storytelling tool exclusive to Final Fantasy 9. It allows you to see the story from one or more viewpoints when the party splits up at towns or events. Some ATE's are mandatory while others are optional. It's up to you whether you want to view these events. Sometimes you are given multiple ATE's to choose from and watching certain ATE's can snag you some nice items like the Power belt or the Chimera armlet early in the game. ATE's can be entertaining to watch and I advise you take a look if it's your first time through FF9. ************** Main Characters ************** Yes yes this is the Characters section of the FAQ and as such I will give a brief background on the eight playable characters and give some information on them. I will also list what type of commands the character has and their trance command. I will now list the main characters in order of appearance. ---------------------------------------------- Garnet Til Alexandros 17th (AKA Dagger) ---------------------------------------------- Garnet is a naive Princess who has lived her life as the daughter of Queen Brahne. She is very polite and somewhat shy but she is determined to stop her mother from waging war on all other neighbouring kingdoms. Garnet also has the innate ability to summon Eidolons. She has had this gift since she was young but she has always been afraid of that power within her and as such locked the Eidolons away inside of her until.... He's a womanising thief who has set his eyes on Princess Garnet. At first it may seem like a childish crush but later on he does develop feelings for her and feels that he has to protect her. Zidane also has a mysterious past...he never knew who his parents were or even where he really came from. All he knows is that Baku is his (adoptive) father and that Tantalus is his home. Vivi is is trying to search for his identity, the "reason" why he exists. Will he find the answers he is looking for? Or will he be too afraid to confront the truth. He is blinded by his loyalty to Queen Brahne and constantly wants to get rid of Zidane thinking that he is a bad influence on the princess. However he follows Garnet on her journey despite his loyalties and during the journey proves that even a stubborn knight can change. She left her home many years ago searching for her lost love Sir Fratley. She firmly believes that Fratley is still alive despite the many rumours that say he is dead. Freya is quietly determined to find him even though she cannot defend the home that she loves. But when she finds Fratley will it be the reunion she expects? Luna 12 30 Puts allies and enemies to sleep. Six Dragons 26 25 ???(email me if you know what this attack does!) Cherry Blossum 46 40 Inflicts non elemental damage to all enemies. Dragon's Crest 16 45 Inflicts non-elemental damage depending on how many dragons the party has killed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------- Quina Quen -------------------------------------------------- Quina is a perculiar character to say the least. Quina's sex can't even be determined because the characters refer to Quina as he/she. She will try and eat absolutely ANYTHING at all. She joins Zidane and Co. because she wants to sample foods from all over the world. But there is more to her/him than meets the eye as she/he knows a person that is important to Vivi. Roulette 18 Randomly causes instant death to ally or enemy -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- Amarant Coral -------------------------------------------------- Amarant is the cold hearted mercenary of the group (hmmm reminds me of two characters I know from FF7 and 8.....) no one knows why Amarant joins the group. Supposedly it was because Zidane defeated him in a fight and he wants to find out why he defeated him. But is that the only reason? Revive 20 Revives one ally Demi shock 20 Damages enemy according to it's HP Countdown 16 Attempts to inflict "doom" status to an enemy. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------ NOTE: I dont have all the AP requirements for all of Amarants abilities but I will try to get them in as soon as I can. --------------------------------------------- Eiko Carol --------------------------------------------- Eiko is the lonely survivor of the summoners Tribe on Madain Sari. She is only six years old but has lived most of her life with the moogles and has gained quite an affection for a particular moogle named Mog. When she first meets Zidane she has a crush on him but soon realises who Zidane is really meant for. She decides to leave and join Zidane even though she broke a promise to her grandfather that she wouldn't leave Madain Sari until she turned 16. Eiko is quite similar to Garnet in that she can use similar equipment and can summon eidolons. She only has 4 Eidolons compared to Garnet's 8 but she outstrips Garnet in White magic as she can learn the more powerful white magic spells earlier than Garnet and uses white magic Garnet cannot use. But soon enough she begins to question her loyalties and duties to Brahne and the reason behind the senseless war. You get to control Beatrix in two brief occasions and here I will list the commands and abilities she gets. Commands that can be used in Battle Attack Seiken Wht Mag Item NOTE: Beatrix doesn't have a Trance ability and cannot use support abilities. She also has her abilities already learned and cannot learn anymore.
