Final Fantasy XI - Combat System
The combat system in FFXI is heavily team-based - single player
combat is relatively simple, much like other games in the series.
You select a target and command, occasionally activating special
moves. As you fight, you build up tactical points (similar to exp)
whic can unlock more advanced moves such as double strike. It is
with these moves that FFXI's combat really comes into its own. Combining
special attacks with those of your comrades can lead to powerful
and visually impressive attacks known as skill chains or magic bursts
(imagine Dual or Triple Techs in Chrono Trigger and you're thinking
along the right lines)
If you find that a fight is too much for you, then the disengage
command allows you to flee the battle - but if that fails and you
die, two options are available. Either you can wait for a friendly
face to revive you, or you can respawn next to your home crystal,
at a large cost to your experience total.
