Final
Fantasy IV: Magic & Summons
In Final Fantasy IV, the basic spells are learned by the magic users as their level increases,
although, some of the summons are aquired through events or with certain items. Spells and summons
require a certain amount of MP (magic points) to cast. Each spell also requires a certain amount
of time to cast.
When a character casts a spell, the amount of MP that was used is subracted from
their total amount of MP. Once a character runs out of MP, they
can no longer cast anymore spells, until it is replenished. This can be done with items, resting in a
tent or Inn, or by taking MP from the enemy by using certain abilities or items.
Some spells can also be cast outside
of battle, to recover HP or heal carried over status effects. There are also spells whose main purpose
is use outside of battle, to see your surroundings, or get out of dungeons. A complete list of magic is
available through the links at the bottom of this page.
Spells can also be
used on multiple targets at once. This can be done both in and out of battle, to target all enemies or
all allies. To select multiple targets, you move the cursor over the party you wish to cast the magic
on, (enemies or allies) and go past them, so that there is a cursor on every character on that side of the screen.
For example, if you wanted to cast Cure2 on all your allies, and they are on the right-hand side of the screen,
you push right on the control pad until the cursor goes past them on the screen, and it selects every one
of them at once.
When spells are cast on multiple targets, the effects of it are spread out over the targets.
This means that the spell is bit weaker than if you cast it on one character, because it is spread out
over many. An example of this is if you wanted to cast an Ice3 spell on four enemies, it does less than if it were on only two
enemies, and that damage is less than if it were only one. The same goes for support magic. The effect will last a shorter
time than if it were cast on a single character.
