The Abilities

The Abilities of Final Fantasy 9 form the basis of it's battle system. The system is relatively simple to grasp for veteran players of the Final Fantasy series as it reuses some of the best parts of older systems and gives it a new twist. In this section I will list the abilities of each playable character and how to obtain each one. Each character has both action and support abilities. Action abilities are highlighted by a red gem next to the name of the ability. Support abilities are highlighted by a blue gem with a small "s" Action abilities are used to directly affect the battle (things such as spells and skills), while support abilities are used to give characters a certain advantage (ie. resistance to poison, increase in HP etc.)

Abilities can be used by simply equiping weapons, armour, accessories etc. But however, once you de equip a certain piece of equipment, the abilities will disappear unless they are learned. You will notice in the abilities menu, there will be a little bar next to the ability with a number on it. This bar shows how much AP (Ability Points) is required to fully learn the ability. Once an ability is learned, the piece of equipment that gave you that ability can be dis-equipped and the ability can be used permanently. AP is gained during battle along with experience points.

In order for support abilities to be active, a certain number of blue crystals must be consumed to activate a support ability. The number of blue crystals a character has can be seen on the main menu and the number increases as they level up. When an ability is deactivated, the number of crystals used to activate it will be given back to the character.

NB: Even though some characters may share certain pieces of equipment, abilites that are in grey when you equip it cannot be learned by that character. Eg. When Eiko equips a ribbon she can learn the action abilities "holy" and "Madeen." But when Zidane equips the ribbon, he cannot learn "holy" or "Madeen" because he is a thief.
