In1958 Disney began
work on 101 Dalmatians. During its production, Walt Disney did not
approve of the art style used in the film. UB Iwerks decided to
make use of the Xerox process to transfer the drawings to celluloid.
While this illuminated the tedious hand inking of thousands of cells,
it gave the art a scratchy, hard outline.
During the course of the filming over 200 dogs were used to create
the basic 15 puppies. The puppies themselves were about 8 weeks
old and had to be replaced after one or two weeks of filming. In
order to keep continuity, the puppies were painted with vegetable
dye so they always looked like the puppies they replaced. The creation
of all 101 puppies entailed the laborious painting of exactly 6,469,952
spots. However, perhaps the most impressive animation feat was the
smoke produced by Cruella De Vil's cigarette. The animators wished
to use it to personify evil and therefore went painstaking efforts.
It is estimated that if all the smoke they used were compressed
into a single cloud it would be enough to blanket a city of one
hundred thousand people.
Hidden in the backgrounds are several familiar objects. Many of
the characters from Lady and the Tramp can be spotted in a pet store
window during the Twilight Bark sequence. Also during the scene
which Jasper and Horace are watching TV they flip past Disney's
award-winning cartoon short Flowers and Trees from1932. Also, history
fans will notice Cruella holding a newspaper with the headline CARLSEN
SPEAKS, and a picture of a capsized ship. This dates the film, as
the media event of the year in 1952 was the sinking of the freighter
called the Flying Enterprise that sank during a prolonged struggle
in the Atlantic.
The picture was finally released in 1961 after three
years in production. It cost nearly $4 million to produce, however,
it became the first movie to ever earn more then $10 million on
initial release. Since then it has earned well over $200 million
worldwide.
